Sala di Giotto e della sua scuola

This room houses works by several fourteenth-century Florentine painters who were followers of Giotto, the great artist who renewed Florentine painting by introducing a more naturalistic portrayal of the surrounding environment.

Among Giotto's pupils were Bernardo Daddi, by whom there are various paintings in the room as well as a large painted Crucifix, and Taddeo Gaddi, represented here by a fascinating series of panels illustrating Scenes from the Life of Christ and St. Francis, originating from the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence where they may have originally adorned the wooden choir stalls.

Also in this room are works of small format, portable sacred images designed for private devotion which were used in the more affluent homes and which travellers often carried with them on their long and hazardous journeys. Among these particularly striking is the diptych by Bernardo Daddi which, alongside the traditional image of the Virgin and Child also portrays the Meeting of Three Horsemen with Three Dead Souls, a subject which invited reflection on the theme of death and eternal salvation.
